Have you ever been entirely lost in the flow of a kirtan? Listening, and maybe even singing along, to the chants and bhajans? Some slow and soothing, some more energetic and fast-paced; all taking you to a place of almost uncontainable ecstasy!
If you have, then you will know the immense relief and happiness that can come from such a space. To be entirely present in the moment, where all the problems of your life seem to have melted, and you feel the protection of a higher energy washing all over you. This is a glimpse into what mantras and sound healing can do for you, for all of us.
Across the world’s various cultures, throughout history, and to this day, sound and music have been celebrated with much passion. We can all agree – when we listen to music, we are transported to another world altogether. A world filled with magic, love, and healing. Wounds of the past start to hurt less, and the soothing melodies ease the burdens of our baggage. Whatever the emotion may be – grief, joy, even anger – music has an answer to them all.
Certain kinds of music and sounds are believed to have potent healing and cleansing energy as well. As the vibrations of our physical and metaphysical bodies resonate with the frequencies of harmony, they bring alignment to the scattered parts of ourselves. Sound healing therapies may seem like a new fad, but they have existed for thousands of years. Our ancestors not only had deeper knowledge of the power of sound, they also put it into practice in different ways.
Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians used sound chambers, while Tibetan monks chanted to create harmony. In Hindu culture, mantra chanting, hymns, and devotional music have always been precious gems of its spiritual treasures. In fact, many rituals have elaborate mantras and shlokas, that are recited in specific preset metres to produce certain frequencies to bring about healing, peace, and harmony.
What’s fascinating to explore, and quite exciting, is that this ancient healing art seems to be seeing a revival in the present day.
At Northern Light Yoga Studio, we embrace these ancient practices, combining them with modern wellness approaches to offer transformative Sound Healing sessions in Oslo.
Whether it’s through Naada Yoga, mantra chanting, or gong healing, we create a space where you can discover your inner harmony.

Yoga, Explained: Healing For Body, Mind, and Soul
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice for holistic wellbeing. It has been around for centuries, if not millenia. Today, its illuminating teachings have reached a global audience, and it gives us much happiness to be able to spread this knowledge through Northern Light, a dedicated space for Yoga in Oslo.
The word “Yoga” (योग in Sanskrit) has its roots in the word, “Yuj” which means “to unite” or “to join”. The essence of Yoga lies in this very word – representing the Union of the body, mind, and soul.
In modern times, there is a belief that the only point of Yoga is expanding the body’s ability to stretch and be flexible, leading to improved physical vitality and health. That is true, to an extent. Yoga is a great approach to improve physical health through its various asanas and flows.
However, Yoga is an approach to holistic wellness that embraces all aspects of our health. It can improve not only our physical health, but works on deeper levels over time to enhance mental and emotional health too.
This ancient approach offers a chance to slow down and reconnect – with our body and breath, with ourselves, and with the environment around us. It can be a powerful stress-reliever for those with demanding jobs. Practicing Yoga regularly can help you deepen your connection with the body and mind, while offering much-needed rejuvenation.
Thanks to the immense wealth of knowledge available to us through the teachings of Yoga, we have a selection of different Yogic curations for you based on the necessities and demands of your body-mind-soul. Explore traditional Hatha Yoga, to the flowy Vinyasa Yoga; move to Kundalini Yoga to deepen your practice and awaken your hidden spiritual vitality. Whatever you feel called to, we are here to offer you the space and tools for it.

What is Naada Yoga?
‘Naada’ (pronounced with a soft ‘d’ sound) is Sanskrit for sound, so essentially, Naada Yoga is The Yoga of Sound.
Many cultures around the world talk about the idea of sound vibrations being the essence of all creation. In Hinduism especially, the Pranava Mantra (the sound “OM” or “AUM”) is believed to be the origin of everything that exists. It is a primordial vibration, and is a powerful chant in most meditations and yoga sessions. The “Hatha Yoga Pradipika”, an authentic source of Yoga teachings, describes Naada Yoga as one of the most powerful and fruitful forms of meditation to calm the mind.
Listening to music often helps us cope with a range of emotions. This very idea is deepened in the ancient tradition of Naada Yoga through the healing power of sound. Naada Yoga addresses two kinds of sounds – the external sources of sound and music (or the struck sound, Ahata) and the internal, quieter vibrations of our body (Anahata, or unstruck sound), both of which can intermingle and promote healing.
The techniques use external sounds, such as soothing instrumental music, singing bowls, or gongs, to bring about a stillness in our mind and body, which eventually leads us into our inner soundscapes. The perception of these sounds can vary from person to person. Some of the sounds could also be actual sounds made by the body, such as the rush of our blood flowing, or the drum-like beating of our heart. Over a period of time, focusing on the music made simply by our being alive can be the doorway to inner peace and stillness.
Want to try Naada Yoga at home? Close your eyes, take a deep breath, then another, and another. Three deep breaths can regulate your breathing pattern. Now, hum softly. Feel the vibrations in your chest and throat. Continue for as long as comfortable, up to 5 minutes, focusing only on the sound. Then relax and slow down the humming until you stop completely. Focus on the silence that arises, and stay in this state until you wish to open your eyes. How did that feel?
Mantra Chanting as a (Science-backed) Meditative Tool
Mantras are not just words but vibrations with meaning and intent. They serve as powerful tools for meditation and spiritual awakening. Chanting "Om" creates a calming resonance, while chants like "Om Mani Padme Hum" symbolize compassion and universal harmony. Repetition of mantras helps anchor the mind and enhance meditation.
Benefits for the Body
The physiological effects of mantra chanting are profound. Studies show that it can lower blood pressure, enhance breathing, and stimulate relaxation. It also impacts brain waves, encouraging a shift from high-stress beta waves to relaxed alpha waves. Naada Yoga techniques can be used with great effects on enhancing mindfulness and mental clarity.
Scientific Support
Science supports what ancient traditions have long understood: sound healing is transformative! Studies show that exposure to specific sound frequencies can lower cortisol levels, improve sleep, and even aid in pain management. Vibrations from instruments like gongs and singing bowls stimulate the body’s cells, promoting physical and emotional healing.
For example, studies on Alzheimer’s patients revealed that listening to specific sound frequencies improved cognitive function.
